At the end of 2019, a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown origin was reported in Wuhan, China. The cases were later determined to be caused by a novel corona virus now called SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19 disease. Since the outbreak’s start and as of March 31, 809,608 confirmed cases of the novel corona virus have been recorded in 179 countries and regions, with 40,636 reported deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. These are official numbers; experts have warned that actual infection rates and number of deaths may be higher.
In an emergency meeting convened January 30, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. On March 11, with the virus continuing to spread around the world, it declared the corona virus outbreak a pandemic.
